The primary function of attic insulation is to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. It also has other benefits, like sound dampening and improved energy efficiency – but did you know it could also help with your pest control efforts? Bug Out uses specially-treated attic insulation that can help prevent certain pests from infesting your home.
Mechanical exclusion – the process of physically preventing pests from entering a structure – is one of the most powerful tools you can use against pests, and our attic insulation is an excellent supplement.
How Does Attic Insulation Control Pests?
Our attic insulation helps prevent pests in two ways: first of all, it’s harder for pests to move through, so they’ll either wear themselves out or turn around. Secondly, our insulation uses a pest-control additive that kills certain pets when they ingest it. The additive is deadly to the following pests:
- Ants >
- Booklice
- Centipedes >
- Crickets >
- Darkling Beetles
- Earwigs >
- Roaches >
- Silverfish >
- Sowbugs >
Since it’s out of the way, full of places to hide, and provides easy access to food and water within the home, the attic is an ideal place for pests to live. Using an extra layer of insulation to help keep them out makes it that much harder for them to get inside.
If you’re dealing with an infestation from another pest not listed above, such as rodents, you’ll need additional treatments to control them.

How is Bug Out Insulation Different from Normal Insulation?
The insulation we use here at Bug Out is made of cellulose and 85% recycled paper treated with a pest control additive. This additive is a naturally occurring mineral that is commonly used in household cleaning products. In small amounts, this additive won’t harm people or pets – or even larger pests.
How Much Does it Cost?
The cost of application will vary depending on the size of the attic space. Your Bug Out technician will give you a cost estimate following your inspection.
The Installation Process
Our insulation can be applied over the top of your existing insulation if needed – but it can also stand on its own as your attic’s primary insulation. Either way, we start with a comprehensive inspection of your attic. We’ll look for any existing infestations, excess moisture, and structural vulnerabilities that need to be addressed before we can install the insulation.
Since each of our services is specifically tailored to your needs, we can only give a broad overview of our process here. Don’t hesitate to call us if you have any questions about specifics.
- Inspection. The first step is always a comprehensive inspection for vulnerabilities and other pest problems.
- Preparation. After the inspection and any repairs or other treatments are complete, we’ll prepare the attic for insulation.
- Installation. This process typically takes around four to six hours due to our “blown-in” insulation. It’s basically sprayed over the area with a large hose, allowing for efficient and thorough coverage.
- It’s that simple! Once the insulation is in place, we clean up after ourselves, help you figure out an ongoing pest control plan if needed, and head out.

Pest Control: Insulation’s control effect begins only after affected insect/arthropod contact with insulation. See product label for affected insects/arthropods. Control of affected insects/arthropods is limited to contact with insulation and does not extend outside of the insulation. Use of insulation does not substitute for holistic pest management. For active pest infestations, you should consult a licensed pest control operator.
Energy Savings: Vary and depend on use patterns, the home’s current insulation, home and system efficiency, and products purchased.
